IN THE TANTALUS ZONE
the losses mount,
the standards fall,
we have slipped
to the abyss;
yet we are not alone
within our fall,
others plummet too
echoing our screams
so many efforts
have gone for naught,
we strive and fail,
make sacrifices
which have no point,
there's never an answer
from the skies
nor from the pit
laid low here
we ache for what we had,
not pie in the sky,
not fantastic dreams,
just what we've lost,
what once was ours
but now is gone
taken by cruel fate
a weakness invades,
we falter, stumble,
only these needs,
these damn demands,
drive us on;
where is there rest,
where is there calm,
where is there peace?
bitterly day
allows us to dream
forgetting how often
dreams are destroyed,
enticingly set
we savor the prize
always beyond grasp
in the Tantalus zone
