A DOZEN NEW POEMS! - #1 of 12

Oh, yes, lucky you! I have, obviously, not been able to get around to getting this lot typed up and posted for quite a while. In fact (as is plentifully evident by the lovely piece on the other side of that oh-so-thoughtful LJ-cut tag) these go back to that rather nasty bit of unpleasantness last month. While this (and especially the fifth stanza) is not specifically directed to the principals of that little debacle, if you want it to "be about you", please feel free to feel accursed! It's all self-service damnation here!

Ah, yes ... another exercise in Brendan finding enough crap to chit-chat about while he posts a mess of poems. I have been "off schedule" a bit with these, largely due to changes in my morning routine since Daughter #1 started at her new school (I may have mentioned the details, but it is all very complicated and I typically find myself running to catch the last possible bus that will get me to MY school on time). I guess the "hanging out at the bus stop" time had become my primary writing slot. Oh well.

Continuing on the thought from the previous post ... my lack of "spare time" to write has had another interesting schedule effect, I have suddenly found it plausible to slip into a Starbucks for 15-20 minutes, suck down an iced tea or coffee, and frantically scrawl out a poem in my little notebook. Amazing. I guess I'm "driven" to get these things written, even if it means forcing out by-myself-sitting-idly time courtesy of over-priced caffeine drinks!

Anyway ... while I am still "on target" to get 200 poems done this year (and remember, I used to write 250 poems per year, year in, year out, and then "walked away" for a while, so getting back up to volume is somewhat of an important thing to me) I'm only barely on target ... so all this "when am I going to be able to write?" stuff is somewhat of a bigger concern than one might, from the outside, consider it to be.

We just started in on Illustrator in the Web Design class at school. I've been having to confront some of my "art insecurities", as I've never been much of a "sketcher", which is a handy thing to have doing vector graphics. While I WAS and Art major in college (it was my third major, behind English and Religion), my emphasis was in Silkscreen, Ceramics, and Silver ... none of which are particularly good background for drawing a pretty picture with one's mouse!

On the subject of Illustrator ... I was reasonably pleased with how my in-class projects came out (even though I had a hell of a time with the from-the-book homework assignments) ... I guess having a good sense of color and line weight can save your ass when you can't figure out how to "dimple" an ellipse! It looks like I'm going to get another "loaner" laptop for this ... since I keep having inexplicable memory issues with Illustrator, and can't get the Macromedia programs to run (due to their registration files not transferring over from the other "image"). All that should be moot if I have a fresh "image" ghosted on the new machine.

Speaking of school ... had a freaky thing today ... they were wanting me to fill out all new application forms ... TWO SETS ... one for the first "class" that I was persuaded to "withdraw" out of (since I was the ONLY student in there and they didn't want to be paying for one-on-one instruction) and one for the new class that I'll be starting into (when the new group "catches up with me") in November. The thing that made me nervous was that the total price was listed on both sheets, and it looke TO ME like I was signing up to pay them all over again. I hate paperwork!

Bleh ... L.J. is being a shit again tonight ... is it useless to hope that at SOME POINT they'll have enough hardware in place that things will work smoothly for the PAID users at least? I get so sick of the "can't find server" and other error messages ... especially when there's supposedly all new stuff in place. Gripe, gripe, gripe ... grumble, grumble, grumble! Since there are only about 5% of all L.J. users in the "paid" category, you'd think that they'd make sure that shit didn't happen for those "the few, the proud" accounts.

I think I'm going to really miss this Web Design class when I end up having to bail on it ... it's a lot of fun. It's going to be quite a transition, going from Flash/Dreamweaver into the deepest bowels of Java ... but that's what's going to be happening the first week in November. At least I'm keeping up that 4.0 average and making good impressions on a wide range of instructors (who should have "personal spheres of influence" useful to my eventuall job search!). Of course, being "back in school" is such a drug to me ... hell, if I won the Lotto, I might just go endlessly for new degrees!

Well ... less than a week till I turn 45 ... how freaky is THAT? I still have a very hard time processing the reality of that age ... sure the body is getting creaky and stuff, but my brain still thinks I'm in my mid-20's! Of course, the body is more than happy to disabuse the brain of any such notions ... it's new favorite is the "deep desire to nap" in the afternoons after having had lunch ... which goes against all my "I can survive with no sleep" programming!

The whole "birthday thing" really gets to me, especially given how damn broke we are. I almost wish I could get my immediate family to hold off on gifts this year ... I am SO bad about "feeling OK about getting stuff" for me that I end up having gift certificates expire, etc. (I just used a $100 cert from Amazon from last year's birthday a few days before it would have gone poof). Of course, with this being a "major" (45 being sort of the half-way point) I can't get folks to ignore it. The Wife keeps pumping me for what I'd like to get, but anything that I can come up with that I'd like to have is WAY too expensive for us to get at this point. (sigh) Maybe I should just suggest more Amazon bucks so I can keep buying CDs.

Well ... here we are, twelve of twelve ... that wasn't SO bad, was it? Sorry to clog up your Friends List ... but this doesn't happen too frequently, ya know? I know that I haven't been posting very much in my L.J. of late, but who wants to hear me whining about crap like missing the bus, or not getting any breakfast, or falling asleep when I should be working? Hell, I have the poems behind cut tags so that folks won't have to actually deal with them when I do get around to posting the little buggers here!
