Loon

Better late than never?

I know that this is getting a bit "meta", but I just did a post over on Facebook about Stan Lee opening up shop over here.

Since I have a "permanent" account, I don't see most of the on-site ads about his arrival, but I've seen posts bitching about these. Frankly, I don't think I've EVER seen so much fanfare being generated on LJ for anything, so I'm guessing Marvel pretty much handed a blank check to SUP and told them to "make it big" (although, nominally, this is being done by Stan Lee's "POW! Entertainment").

What I don't get is why here?, and why now? ... obviously, the initial "glory days" of LJ are behind them, and unless this is a targeted move to get attention in Russia, it seems like doing a flashy store opening in an 80% vacant mall. The one thing that comes to mind is that "they can" here ... as noted, money spent on banners and email notifications on LiveJournal ARE going to get seen by its users ... unlike the situation over on Facebook where you can't depend on "organic" reach.

I did have a passing thought that this could be a "test" by Marvel (OK, through POW!) to see what sort of traction they could get on LJ. If the Stan Lee blog "works" here, I wonder if Marvel/Disney might be eying LiveJournal as an acquisition! That would have fascinating possibilities/implications ...
