Serenity?

Should I bother trying to see Serenity if I've never seen any of Firefly? I mean, I've seen dozens of promos on the SciFi channel, but have never been in front of the TV when they were playing any of the actual episodes ... it sounds (from various reviews on my Friends List) that it's a grand romp if you know all the players and their backstories, but if I'm coming in more-or-less "cold", would I just be scratching my head the whole time?
