If I'm going to be commuting, I might as well look at getting myself a more "current tech" laptop than my 1992-era IBM (although it works fine, it's on the "big and heavy" side), plus it would make sense to have it be something that can run SecondLife.
Since (as noted by much wailing and gnashing of teeth in here earlier this year) SecondLife is rather picky about what is "good enough" in terms of video AND won't work on Vista (yet), I'm likely to be having to look at an XP machine which is not likely to come with an "approved" video chipset. According to the SL Site the video requirements are:
.... along with a list of a couple of dozen brands, types, or Radeon/GeForce model numbers that won't work. So, I'm guessing that units that have an "ATI Mobility Radeon 7500" or "ATI Mobility Radeon X200M" won't be OK, but ones with a "nVidia GeForce 8600MGT" might work.Minimum Requirements:
* nVidia GeForce 2, GeForce 4mx, or better
* OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250, or better
* nVidia GeForce FX 5600, GeForce 6600, or better
* OR ATI Radeon 9600, X600, or better
Can anybody clue me in on how one might upgrade the video on a laptop to work with SL?
