When viral marketing goes bad ...

Wow ... Over on the LibraryThing blog (as referenced in this L.J. post), there's a piece by Abby (or maybe it's Tim, though Abby is referenced in one of the quoted e-mails) about this big dust-up over the competing service Shelfari ... it seems that when you sign up for Shelfari they hijack your e-mail's address book and automatically spam everybody that you've ever written to! I can just see the Shelfari marketing team sitting around figuring how many sign-ups they'd get by this ... and it appears they are getting a bazillion sign-ups, but how fucking sleazy!

What's really disgusting is that Shelfari is Amazon's baby ... which reflects VERY badly on them.
