Damned viruses ...

Daughter #1's computer has been unusable for a while with a bug that makes it reboot as soon as it loads the welcome screen ... we're guessing this is not due to a virus, but to some conflict in some XP automatic upgrade. However, I got in there today (finally coaxing it into Safe Mode so I could look around) and found that it kept launching the browser (despite not having connectivity in SM) and trying to connect to "" which appears to be a signature of Trojan.Initbar which masquerades as an anti-virus program. This could explain why there were THREE supposed anti-virus programs on her SM desktop that I didn't recognize, as well as Napster, which we've never downloaded.

I've tried everything that I could think of (or research) to fix the constantly-rebooting problem and nothing seems to work, so what I'm currently doing is downloading to a flash drive all her files and "game data" and will then use the "nuclear option" of the restore-to-factory disk (which will wipe out all the data on the HDs). I'm hoping that in doing that I'll be "killing two birds with one stone", getting the system to a point where it will fucking BOOT and eradicating this damn virus.

This was not a "happy computer weekend", let me tell you..
