I was an early hater/mocker of Twitter, but as the service "matured" I found it an incredible source of info (I've described it as "looking over the shoulders of top industry folks to see what they're reading online").

However, I just stumbled over something today ... the "Twitpocalypse"!

It seems, much in the vein of the Y2K "bug", that there was a design flaw in the way Twitter identifies individual messages. Now, I'm somewhat unclear on the math involved, but it seems that there is a 32-bit "signed integer" limit of 2,147,483,647 unique identifiers for those individual Tweets, and the service is fast approaching that number.

HERE is the page with the rolling counter. By the current estimate, the "Twitpocalypse" will occur in JUST 4 DAYS!

I'm amazed that this is the first I've heard of this. The end is near!
